ACSL Elementary Contest 3

Division:  Grades 3-6

Time:  Every Saturday , from Sept 23 2023- May 4 2024,  10:30-12:00pm PT, contest 1-4,  32 weeks in total, 1.5 hours /week.

For Final contest, The ACSL officially invites( depends on the score the student achieved) , normally 70% -80% of the students can get into final contest.

BayCodingClub Contest Date is as below, please mark your calendar : * Thanks giving no class : Nov 20-26. Christmas no class : Dec 25 and  New Year, Jan 1st 2024. no class.*

Please aware our classes time may or may not adjusted accordingly, Please make sure the first Priority of ACSL test when you register your kids. Otherwise, for the whole team concern, Please do not register. thank you!

11-Nov Contest 1. warm up 20mins with the coach, before the competition starts
13-Jan Contest 2. warm up 20mins with the coach, before the competition starts
9-March Contest 3. warm up 20mins with the coach, before the competition starts
4-May Contest 4. warm up 20mins with the coach, before the competition starts
Zoom ID and Class instruction will be sent by email.
Please write the student’s name /Grade/student email in the notes when you check out, we will send you information to the email. Be sure to check that email. 

※ I agree that I will complete the ACSL tests independently. I will not consult/copy code from any source including a website, book, or friend/colleague to complete these tests, though I may reference language documentation or use an IDE that has code completion features.
If I was disqualified by the ACSL due to violation of the anti-plagiarism rules, Bay Coding Club shall hold no responsibility.

There is a regular season of FOUR competitions/contests. The Final Test is for the individual s, depends on the Contest 1-4 scores. finals Contest is an individual, the qualified students will be invited by the ACSL ( depends on the 4 contest scores).

There is a $25 per-student registration fee to participate in the Finals.

Session 1: Number systems, bases

      • Introduce the concept of bases. Specifically, bases 2, 8, 10, and 16. Practice converting between base 10 and other bases.
      • Practice problems involving converting to/from base 10. Specifically, challenge/contest problems.
      • Learn about math in different bases. Practice this math.
      • Practice problems involving math in different bases/ Specifically, challenge/contest problems. Mix in some problems that involve converting to/from base 10.
      • Learn about grouping bits into different digits (i.e. the motivation behind octal/hex), and the RGB color system.
      • Practice problems involving RGB and bit groupings. Specifically, challenge/contest problems. Test taking strategies.
      • Test taking strategies. Mixed problem review.
      • Full practice tests.

Session 2: Prefix/Infix/Postfix math notation (i.e. representing math in the form). Students need to understand order of operations 

        • Review / debrief the first exam. Discuss the problems, and any challenges people had. Introduce the concept of prefix / postfix / infix notation. How to evaluate. Practice evaluating.
        • More practice evaluating prefix / postfix / infix.
        • Review order of operations. Work on translating between different ways of expressing expressions.
        • Continue to practice translating between different expressions.
        • Practice problems.
        • Full practice tests.

Session 3: Boolean algebra 

        • Review / debrief the second exam. Discuss the problems, and any challenges people had. Introduce and, or not. Introduce truth tables. Practice making truth tables.
        • More practice with truth tables, and evaluating expressions.
        • Introduce simplifying boolean expressions, and DeMorgan’s law. Practice this.
        • Continue to practice simplifying, and DeMorgan’s law.
        • Practice problems.
        • Full practice tests.

Session 4: Graph theory

        • Discuss / debrief contest 3. Introduce graphs, complete graphs. Begin to discuss paths, simple paths, and loops. Practice this.
        • Practice problems involving topics learned the previous week
        • Degree, traversability.
        • Practice problems.
        • Full practice tests.

Final Contest :  BayCodingClub will have one class of  Training class for the finals. 

Based on the scores during the regular season, top students in all divisions will be invited to participate in an online Finals competition:

There is a nominal per-student registration fee to participate in the Finals to ACSL.
